Tom, you may be right although I would be mildly surprised. My guess is that Patty is torn by loyalty to his SMC teammates and the fact that he would rather spend his time playing basketball (and making pretty good money) than going to classes and doing academic work that has little relevance to his future. As I've suggested before, despite his two years here, he may not fully appreciate the degree of achievement that getting a team like SMC to the Sweet Sixteen or beyond would be. That would again be a realistic goal. For a top American basketball player, it is the kind of thing that would be a career highlight but probably not so for foreign players. Meanwhile, all we can do is wait and see. I hope June 15th comes around fast because at least we'll know one way or the other. Either way, I'm looking forward to next season. Without Patty, I won't have anywhere near the expectations I have had the last two years. But it will still be very interesting to see just how good our new young team will be and from the standpoint of building a "program", success will be critical. With Patty, I think we're over the hump. But if we slip back into mediocrity without him, we will be back where we have been, playing in a half empty 3,000 arena. On the other hand, if we are strong from the get-go, they'll keep coming. I'm cautiously optimistic. Barring key injuries, I will be disappointed if we don't make the post season. Matthew Dellavedova appears to be a very high level recruit and should be part of the backcourt rotation from the start. From what I am reading, he not only has talent and size but is also a leader and competitor. It looks like he might challenge Mickey for minutes at PG. Clint is a great shooter with size and will get minutes. Wayne should have a fabulous senior year having developed confidence in his offense. As for the others, that is the big question mark. Will Collin, Jorden, Trey, or Tim Harris contribute right away? Even if they don't, we still have four pretty good players splitting minutes at the three positions. I agree that the concern is with depth underneath. From the reports out of practice, I think Tim Williams will be very good and he won't really be a freshman. We'll just have to wait and see about Mitchell Young. I think Ben Allen will be better with increased playing time. But it's nice to know that we'll be anchored by a player of the year candidate. Perhaps the bigger concern will be the following year when Ben and Omar leave. |

Re: tryouts | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Hey, GG. Small story about the Warriors' tryout in today's Chron -- it starts June 1 and will last several days (surprising in that no one thinks the
Warriors can organize anything, much less a multi-day tryout with top recruits). Ever heard rumors about civilians crashing these clambakes?

Now that would be fun - fly on the tryout wall
From SFGate: DRAFT WINDS: It's time for have-nots like the Kings, Warriors and Clippers, to dream again with the NBA draft lottery
taking place Tuesday. While Golden State's chances of moving up are slim (less than 5 percent at this year's all-important No. 1 or No. 2 slot), the
team will be center stage in a few weeks. Scouts around the league are flocking to Oakland on June 1 as the Warriors host a multi-day workout that will feature
no shortage of projected lottery and first-round picks.
My comment: I don't know how this workout will benefit the Warriors, their first round choices aren't present and they don't have a second round
pick that I know of. Maybe a trade is in the works.

draft notes | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

the "players" in this years draft will be the Timberwolves and the Trailblazers
They have 5 of the first 32 picks I see no hope of the Warriors getting Patty.... if the Kings don't take him at #23 then I see him falling out of the first round I just think as I look at the teams needing certain things at the bottom of the first round except for the Kings the teams do not need a point guard and teams that are that low usually draft someone from Europe that they can hold onto for awhile or a big that might need a little work to see what they can do The Lakers have too many point guards now and The Cavs don't need someone else to give the ball to King James and watch |

Matt Delevadova is not usually a point guard ...... he is a two guard. Jorden Page, who got 16 vs Portland the other night , is the guy who will challenge Mickey for minutes IMO. Delevadova ....... clearly a 2 GUARD. Freak |

Perhaps Freak, but I based my comments on
this and other press snippets. He apparently is a very good shooter but I also get the sense that he has a "quarterback" mentality. There is
no real substitute for actually seeing a player which is why I am looking forward to the Under-19's.

Nick Calathes is rumoured to be heading to Greece
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4201710 That would be one less PG in the draft that at least some mocks had ahead of Patty. |

But in their current mock (20/05) they have Rubio(2nd), Jennings(7th), Curry(8th), Maynor(13th), Flynn(14th), Lawson(17th), Mills(18th), Teague(22nd), Holliday(24th), Collison(31st), Jerrells (37th) |

Try finding a mock that has Lawson and Holiday behind Patty - few and far between. So I think Patty's more like 9, and in competition with Collison, who
reckons he's the quickest dude in the draft, and Jerrells - who tried out for the Mavs along with the other two. I guess Calathes thins out the first round
bubble guards somewhat.

Click on Patty's name in message 71 and watch Patty's You Tube. Then, keep going afterwards. It's amazing the connections you'll find for
either Patty or Saint Mary's. I spent a few hours watching videos.

Another opinion | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Mike Miller at NBC sports gave the following assessment of Patty:
Patty Mills, St. Mary's Mills is a blur with the ball, but plays too fast and his outside shooting is sub-par and probably just a late first-rounder as a result. An injury deflated his season, and the Gaels'. If he returns, Mills could dethrone Gonzaga in the WCC, be a national player of the year candidate, get to the Big Dance and re-establish himself as a lottery pick. He lists Patty among the players (20 in all) who should go back to school and gain another year of experience. One of many opinions to come in the next couple of weeks. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. GO GAELS! Brisbin 84' |

Are you sure "Mike Miller" isn't a pseudonym for someone on this board? I couldn't have written the scouting report any more favorably to our
cause -- even though I disagree with his analysis. The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes, and it will be served within the next two weeks.

Chicago Bulls conduct secret workout of Syracuse point guard
By K.C. Johnson | Tribune reporter May 27, 2009 With two first-round picks in what is widely considered to be a weak draft, it's impossible to predict what the Bulls will do on June 25. Nevertheless, news that the Bulls worked out Jonny Flynn over the weekend is intriguing merely because most mock drafts have the Syracuse point guard listed as a lottery pick. The Bulls own the 16th and 26th selections. Flynn worked out with St. Mary's point guard Patrick Mills and Arkansas point guard and Marshall High graduate Patrick Beverley. The Bulls didn't announce the workout, which is a fairly common practice. The Bulls also conducted a workout of wing players with reputations of athleticism that included Arizona's Chase Budinger. |
