Mills keeping name in NBA draft
By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer Monday, June 1, 2009 (06-01) 19:38 PDT Oakland, Calif. (AP) -- Patty Mills is prepared to test his talent in the NBA. More Sports The Australian Olympic star and point guard from Saint Mary's College said Monday he will forgo his final two years of college eligibility and keep his name in the NBA draft. "In my head, I'm 100 percent in," Mills said. "There's a great opportunity for me to play in the NBA this year and I'm trying to make the most of the opportunity." The 6-foot, 175-pound Mills was among 12 players to work out in two separate sessions Monday for 21 NBA teams at the Golden State Warriors' practice facility. He even campaigned for the Warriors to select him on draft day June 25 so he can stay in the Bay Area. "It's home away from home for me at the moment," Mills said, wearing navy blue Warriors practice gear and sporting a Golden State towel around his neck. He said the only way he would return to school would be if enough teams told him before the draft that he should play another college season. "I haven't heard that as of yet," Mills said. He is set to leave Wednesday to attend a showcase camp in Italy for European teams, then said he will have workouts with Detroit, Atlanta and Milwaukee. This draft is heavy with point guards and Mills knows it. "If you look at it this year, it gives me more motivation," he said. He is committed to turning pro even if his stock were to drop to the second round, though he is projected as a late first-rounder. He saw first hand some of the other top players at his position. Wake Forest's Jeff Teague, Eric Maynor of Virginia Commonwealth and Arkansas' Patrick Beverley also participated in his six-player session Monday. About half of the hour-long workout was devoted to drills and the rest to 3-on-3 play. "They're all great point guards," said Mills, who turns 21 in August. "It's good to come in here and work out with them to see where I'm at and where they're at as well." Mills, who averaged career highs of 18.7 points, 4.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals during his sophomore season at Saint Mary's, broke his hand Jan. 29 against Gonzaga but returned for the West Coast Conference tournament and the Gaels' run to the quarterfinals of the NIT. He had his hand examined four weeks ago and an X-ray showed it's completely healed. Mills made a name for himself nationally with his standout freshman season and NCAA appearance with Saint Mary's College. But he became internationally known with his performance in the Beijing Games as the lone college player in the field. Mills scored 20 points in the quarterfinals against the gold-winning U.S. team full of NBA stars. He also had three assists, two steals and no turnovers. U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke took notice. So did Kobe Bryant, who recently offered Mills some advice. "I still act like a small kid and get excited," Mills said of talking to Bryant. "He said, 'Look, believe in yourself. You showed it against us in the summer.' ... Obviously my Olympic campaign helped me a lot last summer." |

Great Talent, we thank him for his contributions to Saint Mary's Basketball. I will still always remember the Oregon game at home (a special win) Still
hasn't proven a lot from an accomplishment standpoint (no NCAA tournament wins, no WCC championships, no SMC records (that I know of)) but the NBA drafts
on potential and he has that. I still personally think he needs another year but as Alameda Gael would tell me "your not a professional" and the NBA
scouts know what they are talking about so...
Now we can stop what-iffing and get down to real talk about next year's team. On a side note, I think one interesting and probably heated conversation we could have is "where does Patty Mills rank in the SMC greatest players of all time?" I actually do not put him in my top five and maybe not even in my top ten. I don't think Meschery or Kickert loose their one two spots, although Diamon really can make a great case for #2 all time and then moving Kicks to #3. Depending on this season, maybe Omar can be in that top 10 range also. |

And now from the Chron | ||
Mills: Ready for prosMonday, June 1, 2009 (06-01) 21:00 PDT -- Patty Mills sat alongside an NBA practice court Monday, sporting an NBA jersey and dealing with an NBA-size media contingent. He was plenty comfortable with the whole scene. "In my head, I'm 100 percent in (the draft). There's an opportunity there, and I want to make sure I grab both horns and go for it," Mills said. "I suppose there's always a backup plan, but in my head, there's no backup plan." The Australian Olympic point guard announced Monday that he will forgo his final two years of eligibility at St. Mary's, though he has until June 15 to officially withdraw his name from the NBA draft. Mills was among 12 players to participate in two separate workout sessions for 21 teams at the Warriors' practice site in Oakland, but his comments stole the show from the other prospects. Mills is projected as a late first-round pick or an early second-round choice. He said he doesn't need a first-round promise, which comes with a guaranteed contract, to remain in the draft pool. "I just need an opportunity, and once you make it to that level, you've got to make sure you stay there," he said. Mills doesn't have much else to prove at the college level, having led St. Mary's to 53 wins and one NCAA Tournament berth in two seasons. He averaged 16.4 points, 3.7 assists and two steals a game and shot 41.5 percent from the floor. Neither St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett nor athletic director Mark Orr could be reached for comment. In the 2008 Olympics, as the youngest player in the history of Australian basketball, Mills averaged a team-best 14.2 points a game and had two assists and 1.7 steals in 23 minutes. As a 19-year-old, leading a team with players mostly in their mid-30s, Mills went for 20 points, three assists, two steals and no turnovers in the quarterfinals against the U.S. team. "That experience was the highlight of my career," Mills said. "I can always use that summer campaign to prove to teams that I can compete at that level when I'm healthy." Mills missed the final nine regular-season games for St. Mary's with a broken right hand that he says is healthy now. Scouts have other worries, however. One evaluator at Monday's workout said Mills, who was measured to be 6-feet at the Chicago combine last week, was "exposed on defense, especially when he was posted up." Though this year's draft class is widely viewed as weak, the point-guard pool is rather deep. Mills is expected by most to be selected after Ricky Rubio, Stephen Curry, Jonny Flynn, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague and Virginia Commonwealth's Eric Maynor, who worked out in Oakland on Monday. "He's fast and uses the ball screen well," Teague said of Mills. "I've been knowing of him, and he's a tough competitor," Maynor said. Mills also said his jump shot was often short, because he felt a little jet lag after flying from Chicago on Sunday night. On the other hand, no one is questioning his speed, his ability to penetrate and his creative finishing, which all have drawn comparisons to San Antonio's Tony Parker. "He's shown us what he can do," a scout said. He's not done quite yet. He leaves Wednesday for the Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy, where he'll get his first chance to work out for teams in a 5-on-5 setting. He also has workouts scheduled with Detroit, Atlanta and Milwaukee. Mills didn't make it any secret that once the pre-draft travel is done, he'd love to end up back in the Bay Area on June 25. "This is my home away from home," Mills said. "After flying in from Chicago, I was relieved to smell the Bay Area air." Oh well, he's going 'all in'. He must just want to play in the league very badly and is even prepared to take a some risks to do that. Perhaps of
the borderline guys he's just deciding to beat the pack and express his unwavering keenness to play despite the risks, hoping that teams will see this.
Even though he says he has no backup plan, it probably makes Treviso all the more important because he may have to drum up some Euro-business it seems like he
might be out of a day-job. It seems exciting but it must finally be a bit deflating for the SMC alumni and faithful.

I'd like to think Patty would stick around next year, beat Gonzaga 3 times, and see Saint Mary's go deep into March.
Then he'd definitely be a million dollar draftee. But no matter where or when Patty leaves, he'll always be a Gael, and we will be rooting for him. Even if he ends up a Clipper. |

I wonder...... | ||

If as classy as Patty is if he is helping St. Mary's by declaring now while there are still non-committed recruits out there....
also, I see where he still has not hired an agent or if it is a process he can begin now even as he leaves for Italy |

From Tuesday Sacramento Bee
Patrick Mills referred to himself as a "young" point guard that wanted to prove he knew how to run a team shortly after a workout in front of 21 NBA teams Monday afternoon at the Golden State Warriors practice facility. Mills, who turns 21 in August, however has a couple of years on a some of the other top point guards in this year's draft class. Spain's Ricky Rubio is 18. Other point guards such as Jrue Holiday and Brandon Jennings are just one year removed from graduating high school. Mills played two seasons at St. Mary's College in Moraga before declaring for the draft without hiring an agent. But he sounds like a player that has no intention of withdrawing his name from the draft. "In my head I'm one hundred percent in," Mills said. "There's an opportunity there and I want to make sure I grab it by both horns and go for it. There's always that backup plan but in my head, certainly, there's not that backup plan." Should the Kings pass on a point guard with the fourth overall pick, Mills could be an ideal fit at No. 23 or No. 31. Mills hasn't spoken with the Kings, but the team is familiar with the speedy point guard. Mills is from Australia and played on his country's Olympic team last summer. "Patty" didn't start for Australia but led the team with 14.2 points per game. He played some of his best basketball against NBA players. He scored 20 points with three assists, two steals and no turnovers against the United States in a quarterfinals loss. Mills had 22 points against Argentina, which had five NBA players. Mills calls the Olympics the "highlight" of his young career and said the experience made putting his name into the draft an easy one. And the scar on Mills' right hand is another reason not to risk a return to college. Mills missed time with a broken hand last season. While he was out, he had the opportunity to speak with Kobe Bryant at a Warriors game. Mills received more affirmation that he could play in the NBA from that conversation. "I still act like a small kind, you know?" Mills said of speaking with Bryant. "I get that excited. ... Him saying I have the ability to play at the next level gives me that much more confidence." As Sam Amick pointed in Sunday's Bee, Mills does come with some questions about his shooting and turnovers. But Mills (6-0, 185) has shown he has the kind of speed to push the temp offensively. And in a conference with players such as Chris Paul, Tony Parker and Aaron Brooks leading teams, speed at point guard is at a premium. Mills averaged 18.4 points and 3.8 assists as a sophomore. He shot only 40.2 percent from the field and made 33.8 percent of his threes. Mills is confident enough in his ability that he's not seeking the first-round guarantee many prospects without agents want to stay in the draft. He's looking for positive feedback and said he'd go back to St. Mary's if NBA teams told him he wasn't ready to contribute. Mills believes he's mature enough already based on his play in the Olympics. "Summer campaign I was only 19 at the time, running a team that was in their mid 30s," Mills said. "I see myself in a similar position if I get in the league this year. Something I'm familiar with." Mills has workouts scheduled with Detroit, Milwaukee and Atlanta. And he'll head fly to Italy Wednesday for a European camp for
draft prospects.

Just a thought: is there really that much more here than in prevous positions taken by Patty? I see indications that Patty is doing spin control here, perhaps
gleaning that his neutral stance vis a vis the draft was being interpreted by NBA types as indecision. So, he took the opportunity of the opening of the
Warriors' camp to show he was "all in" (borrowing from another post). Still no agent, still no irrevocable steps, despite the Chron's
assertion that he "was giving up his final two years at Saint Mary's." That is the Chron's interpretation but the words are not Patty's.
I think it's still a waiting game, with no decision made.

As many of us have felt, it was clear he was going months ago. HOWEVER these comments from Patty aren't really any different. He said in his head he is
100% in which is what I'd expect but if things don't look positive then he has a fall back (i.e. SMC).
I doubt he'll get an agent until the 15th or close to it. He could always play poorly in Europe or worse yet get hurt that would affect his chances. His plan is the NBA this year but he will not cut any options until he has to. |

Excerpt: Saint Mary's senior forward Diamon Simpson, who was a reserve at Monday's workouts, said he doesn't want to push Mills in either direction. Simpson said he was pretty sure Mills could play at the NBA level but that after watching him Monday, he has no doubt. "I'm a lot more certain now," Simpson said. "It's a good possibility he's gone." Mills' likely successor at point guard for the Gaels is junior-to-be Mickey McConnell, who started 13 games last season, including during the span when
Mills was sidelined with a broken right hand. McConnell, 6-foot, averaged 5.4 points and 2.2 assists per game, shooting 40.5 percent from 3-point range.

Freak is on a roll today...Mills is gone! Done deal. I think the biggest question at this point is whether or not he took care of business enough this past
semester so that he won't have an impact on SMC's APR. Trust me when I say that it's not a given that there won't be any APR repercussions.
As for the Goodwin bros...they are from Oakland and have deep ties dating back to Gary Payton and J. Kidd. I'm sure they have had their "runners" sinking their hooks into Patty for several months now. |
