A good effort, but...Stanford was just too strong, or, I should say, too quick. The Gaels outplayed the Cardinal in the first half, controlling the ball and creating more scoring opportunities. But in the grinding heat of a Moraga Sunday (93 degrees at kickoff, soaring to 100), Stanford's overall advantage in team speed made the difference. The Stanford women started getting to loose balls first, creating several scoring chances until they finally cashed one in. The Saint Mary's goalkeeper made several true saves or it could easily have been 3-0 or 4-0. Still...considering it was the number one ranked team in the country, Saint Mary's showed itself competitive. We're just another one or two top-ranked players away from being in the Cal-Stanford class.
