SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / BCN)

The coach and four members of the Saint Mary's College men's basketball team were in Sacramento Thursday morning being honored by the state Legislature for their success in the NCAA Tournament in March.

Coach Randy Bennett and players Ben Allen, Phil Benson, Mickey McConnell and Jorden Page were scheduled to be recognized by both the state Senate and Assembly for their accomplishments, school spokesman Michael McAlpin said.

The Gaels were the only team from California to win their first two games of the tournament and reach the Sweet 16. Their wins included an upset victory over the heavily favored Villanova Wildcats.

At 9 a.m., state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, and Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, were scheduled to present the coach and players with state resolutions recognizing the team for its run in the tournament.
