Bleeding Red and Blue
Another sizzling day in the Las Vegas sun saw some explosive performances on the hardwood as single elimination tournament play took over the courts at high schools throughout the area. As Day 3 came to a close, it was Langston Walker of the Drew Gooden Soldiers who put on a show. Here’s a look at some of the best from Saturday’s action…
(Note – Listed in alphabetical order)
NICK ALLEN – 6’0” – PG – 2013 – MILWAUKEE SPARTANS One of the top young talents on the rise in the Badger state, Allen helped the Spartans to a come from behind victory over Grassroots Canada with a big time second half performance that included dribble penetration, mid range looks, and a strong overall floor effort to lead his team to victory.
CHANGE BEHANAN – 6’6” – PF – 2011 – OHIO BASKETBALL CLUB Struggled on Friday but bounced back on Saturday with a strong performance in the Adidas Super 64 that showcased his power, athleticism, and instincts. Scored on the blocks, finished in transition, and was lethal at times on the boards to push OBC to victory.
JABARI BIRD – 6’5” – SF – 2013 – DREW GOODEN SOLDIERS May not get the burn on a team that’s loaded with talent but Bird has some huge upside and explosive athleticism. A highlight reel waiting to happen in transition, Bird soared above the competition at times and dunked everything in sight in the open court. Long, athletic, and instinctive, Bird looks the part of a high major slasher in the coming years.
DEONTE BURTON – 6’5” – G/F – 2013 – T.P. ELITE Helped lead a second half rally after a sluggish first half performance and showed his power, athleticism, and dominant potential in the process. Attacked the rim off the bounce, dominated the boards, and took over the games at times to lead his team to victory in a morning playoff contest.
NICK FULLER – 6’4” – G – 2013 – WISCONSIN SWING Continues to see his stock elevate and Saturday saw much of the same as Fuller knocked down jumpers and continued with his strong play that has been commonplace the entire month of July. He has range, can score the basketball, looks stronger, and continues to evolve into a quality talent.
AVRY HOLMES – 6’1” – PG – 2012 – TEAM JONES Excellent young floor leader with savvy, athleticism, vision, range, and breakdown skills. Can distribute and facilitate, has a solid mid range game, he can knock down the three, and he physically punishes opposing guards. One of the best kept secrets in the country, Holmes can play and he turned in a big time performance on Saturday.
ZACH LAVINE – 5’10” – PG – 2013 – FOH (WA) A lean young floor general who looks like a ball boy at first glance, Lavine has major game. He has handles, sees the floor well, plays with a swagger, hits the mid range jumper, and he has a lethal stroke from beyond the arc. Don’t sleep on this young man as he looked the part of an excellent young floor general on the rise in the 2013 class.
XAVIER RATHAN-MAYES – 6’2” – G – 2013 - GRASSROOTS CANADA A strong perimeter talent with excellent strength, range, and instincts, Rathan-Mayes was exceptional during a first half performance that included trey balls, mid range looks, dribble penetration, and playmaking. He has a great feel for the game, handles the ball, can get to the rack, and has a lethal stroke that makes him virtually unstoppable when he gets it going.
MCKENZIE MOORE – 6’6” – G – 2011 – TEAM 94 Arguably one of the breakout performances of the day, Moore was virtually unstoppable as Team 94 “upset” a loaded MBA Hoops Elite squad (Hood, Ross, Smith, etc.) in the 17U championship tournament of the Adidas Super 64. Moore hit trey balls, scored off the bounce multiple times, hit some mid range looks, and showed his versatility and athleticism by playing the 1, 2, and 3 at times during the game. His activity combined with his ability to score the basketball proved to be too much and Moore made his mark in the process.
LANGSTON WALKER – 6’4” – SG – 2012 – DREW GOODEN SOLDIERS This dude can go, it’s that simple. One of the most explosive off guards in the country for the 2012 class, Walker has big time athleticism, power, range beyond the arc, an ability to attack the rim off the bounce, and looks the part of a high major talent nationally. In a scintillating playoff effort, Walker put on a show with his versatility, skill, instincts, and dominance and put his name on the map in major fashion as a result.
