Day 9 August 17 (Gold Coast) After a little beach time and a near death experience for Trey and Omar who had to be rescued by the lifeguards, it was time for game one of our two games against the Gold Coast Blaze in Brisbane. We lost by eight but played pretty well in the second half. They were led by fomer Cal guard Ayinde Ubaka.
Gold Coast Blaze 82, SMC Gaels 74 - Game Stats The Gaels struggled early, trailing by 12 points at the half, but rallied to make it a game before falling, 82-74 to the NBL's Gold Coast Claze. It was a 2-point game with 48 seconds left, when former Ubaka hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to five and the Blaze made all their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory. The Gaels made a strong second half run behind the play of Omar Samhan who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds and two blocks. Playing all 40 minutes, McConnell was solid again for the Gaels contributing 15 points and five assists. Trey Anderson chipped in 12 points and Tim Williams added nine points and eight rebounds. Ben Allen pulled down 11 rebounds. Again, Wayne Hunter was exceptional defensively. Clint Steindl returned to the line-up, playing 14 minutes and hitting a big 3-pointer down the stretch, while playing in his home state of Queensland.
The Gaels will conclude their Australian tour Tuesday night, when they face the Blaze again at 7 p.m.We'll try to end the tour on a winning note and head back to the States the following day.

I watched about half of the game and will watch the rest later. I agree with the above comments, especially Alameda's observations about Mickey and Omar. I have to mention that Wayne was terrific on defense which is no surprise. Although I'm not much of a drinker these days, I'd love to join you all and hoist a tall one for internet TV. What a treat to be able to watch all but one of our newcomers this summer! I really like Tim Williams, he is active, not afraid to mix it up, and has a very nice shot. He clearly has high major talent so another great recruiting find by RB. As I guessed, Colin played his way out of the rotation with a couple of ill advised shots but I like his potential. Trey was a starter! I didn't get to see much of his offense yet but he looked solid. He is athletic and his size makes him valuable, especially on defense. Ben was a lot more active underneath than he was last year.
This team is going to be quite good. Although five freshmen figure to get minutes, one cannot exactly say it is a young team as two of those freshmen are redshirts and the three new Aussies are not at all typical freshmen in terms of the development of their game. The point guard is a junior, the best player is a super senior and he is joined by two other solid super seniors.
