Moraga Faithful
Day 10 - August 18 (Gold Coast)
Gold Coast Blaze 85, SMC Gaels 84 - Game Stats In the final game of their Australian tour, the Gaels lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer 85-84 to the Gold Coast Blaze of the NBL. Leading 84-83 with less than 10 seconds remaining and the shot clock about to expire, Omar Samhan missed a short jumper in the lane. The Blaze's Chris Goulding went end to end and missed a tough lay-up, but it was tipped in at the buzzer by the Blaze's Anthony Petrie. The last second basket spoiled what would have been a great team win for the Gaels, who played their best basketball in the final game of the tour. They were once again led by Omar Samhan's 21 points and 11 rebounds. Wayne Hunter added 20 points, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Ben Allen pulled down a team-high 18 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Mickey McConnell contributed 15 points and five assists. Trey Anderson was the 5th Gael in double figures with 12 points. For the trip, Omar Samhan averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds and Mickey McConnell averaged 17 points and six assists. Ben Allen averaged a team-high 14 rebounds per game. My comment: These averages will suit me just fine for the regular season - the NCAA's best rebounding duo - again?

I see him backing up McConnell at PG. Hunter slides to the Wing if Harris, Page, Anderson and Dellavedova can defend and shoot well (tough order for a frosh) and Chiverton and Steindl continue to faulter (which I don't expect to continue given that both have a year in the program). Rather than a starting 5, I am looking at who are the first 9 in the rotation because, I don't foresee the same 5 every night. We have had the benefit of lots of coverage for the 3 Aussies, but we really don't know how Tim Harris will rank in head to head competition. Again, my disappoint was not seeing Chiverton zoom ahead like I expected to solidify the wing position.

Omar Samhan (red uniform - and a bit chizzled in his form) battles Greg Vanderjagt of Gold Coast Blaze (NBL) http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2009/08/19/109715_gold-coast-blaze.html
