I don’t know if anybody here remembers the 89ish 76ers … but I’m getting a Barkley and Mahorn vibe from the Jones/Walker frontcourt. Undersized 4 man, with guard handles and great offensive game and vertical and a center that will let you know he’s there. Could be Thump and Bump Part II.

Williams has a lot of potential … but so does Young. He fell of the map and lost his confidence after the GU game, but at the start of conference, he was ridiculous. Anybody else remember those tip jams? When you consider the progress, I see him getting a lot of burn. The other thing to support my argument is, even when he wasn’t playing well, Mitchell looked bad/didn’t play … because the defense would double Omar/the offense would bog down without Allen’s shooting. That’s not really a concern the way this frontcourt is constructed. Based upon what we saw in January, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Mitchell doing a poor man’s impression of Jakim Noha’s first few years with the Bulls.

Whereas, Williams is a huge burly beat that can score a ton of different ways. In many respects, they are the opposite sides of the same coin. Young has limitations and a lower ceiling, but his motor is really strong, he’s very good on the defensive end and boards. Those are like a check list for Williams to work on.

All four guys will play, that’s a decent mix of scoring, defense, ect.

Like everybody else, I see a platoon of guys from 1-3. Clint needs to make a jump. As a long time Kings fan, he reminds me so much of Peja. Just dripping with talent, but unable to grab/use it. There are times where you wonder if he’s not that good, or if he’s just not able to harness it, or not adept to pressure, or if he even gets how good he is … and don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of him. It was there for him this fall, and he didn’t grab it. You almost get the impression that – if not for the Hunter injury – he doesn’t make the jump he made. Fate threw him into the deep end of the pool, and he made progress. Next year, it’s on him. He could be only slightly better or dramatically different.

The leader. Look, this is going to be taken the wrong way … but hear me out. Mickey is a senior, a quality, person, and a strong “leader” in his own right … but this team will take off when Delly becomes comfortable enough to the more dominant personality on this team. That may be game one, because I think they both know it … but he’s young, unselfish, and only a sophomore. With Omar gone, there will be a huge leadership/Alpha dog gap. And let me explain what I mean by that, two years ago … Diamon was the “leader” but in many ways, Omar was the voice/personality of that team. Plus, there was the Patty personality. Never one chemistry/leadership issue … but team didn’t have one general, center, gregarious alpha dog … Omar was that guy last year. He always kept his guys on track, loose, and focused. To me, Delly is the next guy. He’s our Bouldin.

Similarly, I liked at the end of the year, where Delly became more of the playmaker for Mickey. So I think this matters some on the court, but mostly in the locker room.



I think Delly will give proper deference to Mickey regarding playmaking and leadership … I think this team will be better when Delly grows into the slightly larger role (they are going to be 1A and 1B all year, so it’s not like there will be any issue) but I am predicting a noticeable positive change at some point.
