The Utah fans seem to be universally interested in him (http://www.utefans.net/message.php?id=1171626) and think he is going to be Hill's top target come April. As far as jobs go, Utah isn't bad. They are power conference school, in a great city, with a decent tradition. It's definitely not a trash job like Oregon St. The problem is their fanbase seem to think the program is North Carolina or Duke instead of a decent major. Any thoughts?

And, we'll just have to see the timing of that position and RB's continued efforts to raise Saint Mary's national profile and the support of the SMC Administration. Right now, RB needs the Gael Sports Center, which gives the entire athletic department a sports training and conditioning facility (expansion of McKeon). See my post under General Discussion and Br. President Gallagher's comments about such. http://godisagael.yuku.com/topic/5112/State-of-the-College-2011-Br-President-Gallagher My guess from experience with other similar projects is that it's about a $10-13M project, and we don't have a lead donor for that project, and that's a real shame because of long ago established projects (Trustees established priorities) still getting funded for the Student Rec Center, Baseball Stadium (a third party beneficiary of the aforementioned project), and the desperately needed expansion to the library facilities. BTW, hate to bring this up, look for basketball game seat licensing agreements to dramatically increase the prices for all season ticket holders for next season. It's got to happen. Laws of supply and demand must find equilibrium We all have to pay our sports teams' way to achieve more. There's no free lunch. Careful what you ask for ... you may just get it! I don't think this is in the cards You are looking at a program like (fill in the blank) that has fallen on tough times for the past 3-5 seasons. They have a mobile alumni/booster base ready and willing with a war chest of money. With that money will come expectations...as in 3-4 years to be conference winners and back in the dance. Utah Utes: Fired Boylen (4 years), predecessor Giacoletti (3 years)....and this job is appealing why? Arkansas: Fired Pelphrey (4 years), predecessor Altman (resigned after 26 hours), before that Heath (5 years)....and still trying to replace Richardson's success Providence: Fired Davis (3 years), predecessor Welsh (10 years) Sure, Bennett could go for a money grab and probably triple his current salary. However, expectations will also jump ten fold. All I have to say is that by year 2, if the turnaround is not evolving, better have a contingency plan in place. At SMC, he can become a lifer in the mold of Few at GU (12 years) or McKillop at Davidson (19 years). His family has carved out a great situation as evidenced by the ESPN video and he has the opportunity to really lead the institution to the next level as more exposure comes to the WCC in the form of BYU. 2 institutions that I would fear if they came calling would be ASU as already mentioned and Stanford. ASU has a decent fan base, recently upgraded facilities and a strong alumni/booster group fueled by football. Stanford is in the mix as well as I don't believe that Dawkins will be able to make them Duke of the West.

No timeline has been identified for the discussions, but the conversations likely took place in Las Vegas last week during the Mountain West Tournament. Bennett had been in Las Vegas with the Gaels for the West Coast Conference tournament, where they fell to Gonzaga in the final on Monday. Utah was in Las Vegas for the Mountain West Conference tourney, which concluded Saturday. Tuesday night, Saint Mary's was eliminated in the first round of the NIT, falling 71-70 in Moraga to Kent State. Afterward, Bennett addressed the Utah situation, responding to a question about whether he'd interviewed for the position. "It's irresponsible reporting if somebody said that," Bennett said. Utah fired coach Jim Boylen on Saturday and a handful of names have emerged as possible candidates in addition to Bennett. Among them are Virginia's Tony Bennett and former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried. Utah joins the Pac-12 next year and Bennett has been a hot candidate to move from his position at a mid-major to a conference with a higher profile, and significantly higher salaries. He has led Saint Mary's to four consecutive 20-win seasons and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Utah athletic director Chris Hill told the Deseret News of Utah that there is no timeline, and he isn't in a rush to hire a replacement for Boylen. "There's not an arbitrary set qualifications or a timeline," Hill told the newspaper. "We've just got to do our research and get the best person we can here. It's an attractive job, given our history, our facility and moving into the Pac-12. We feel we can do our research and find somebody good."

I think the events of this past week change things significantly, and I don't know how anyone could argue to the contrary. Yes, St. Mary's has a very good program. Yes, Moraga is a dream place to live (we heard Rick Majerus talk endlessly about St. Mary's being his dream "final" job). But the ceiling at Utah is higher, offers more exposure and the Aussie pipeline translates nicely to Utah given our history there before Boylen blew it up, among several other advantages. If our biggest disadvantage is an overexuberant fanbase, so be it. We've been down this road with Urban Meyer, who left a better football situation at Utah than Bennett would leave in hoops at St. Mary's, and it's all about opportunity to compete at the highest levels for just about any coach who isn't locked in to lifer status at his current school. I'm not trying to be insulting to St. Mary's -- but the difference between the two schools is what it is. Great for St. Mary's if it can keep Bennett. He has plenty of reasons to stay, and Utah should find a good coach out of this deal. I just think the events of the last week would give any coach a valid reason to look elsewhere.

Coach Bennett has not personally interviewed for the Utah job nor has he had discussions with them. He could not do so while the team was still playing basketball. Up to this morning only his agent had been contacted by the University of Utah. With last night's loss that could change. I am told Utah is likely to put a full court press on RB, including offering significant sums, to get him to move. However, Coach Bennett has been very upfront with Br. Ron and Mark Orr about what it will take for him to stay in Moraga.... and it is not money for an increased salary.... *IT IS FACILITIES*. Coach Bennett has asked the College to fund/build the Performance Athletic Center at the back of McKeon. If built RB believes the PAC will give him the necessary tools to recruit and make St. Mary's competitive for a very long time to come (a side benefit is increased seating to about 4000). RB has a big vision for St. Mary's and loves the College. His loyalty to the program and school, plus his unselfishness, is unparalleled (and to be admired) in today's "me first" society. He could coach at SMC a very long time if built. The question is: Will the College and its supporters step up to the plate and deliver? I believe we will. GO GAELS.... Looking forward to next season. In my view, keeping Bennett is the key to continued success for the men's basketball program. If he left, who takes over? Kyle Smith does not seem like the kind of guy to bolt Columbia after one season. No current assistant is qualified, yet. Furthermore, if he left, I think your recent history of success goes on a fairly quick slide downward. I think if RB stays for the long haul, an 18 win season is a bad year. Not bad in the life of a mid-major. If he leaves, 18 might be a good year. Just my view from way off the reservation. voice

I also think that you didn't give Coach Boylen a fair shot. Nor Coach Giamatti for that matter. I wouldn't want to work for an AD/fan base with such a quick hand on the trigger. Go fish elsewhere. Both coaches left as holders of two of the worst career marks in over 100 years of Utah basketball. That said, I'm not going to ignore some of the issues I believe we have as a program that helped contribute to their lack of success. But my point remains the same regarding the career ceiling at Utah vs. St. Mary's, both looking back and going forward.
