Alright folks- The 2012 premiere Division 1-A Rugby National Playoffs are shaping up.
Even though our Gaels have one more game to play against Davis, they have buttoned up the Pacific Division. UCLA comes in second and will take the runner-up slot in the bracket.
According to Rugby Magazine- here's how the playoffs look-
(I also put the current national rankings beside the name)
- Mid-South Runner Up (Life #3 or Arkansas State #5) at East Champions (Army #2
or Penn State #7)
- East Runner Up at Mid-South Champions
BTW- Why is Life in the college ranks? That is NOT a college. It’s a rugby club that put “University” in their name. I digress. Well, whatever they are, they play at ASU and Army plays at PSU this coming weekend. That’ll decide those brackets.
- UCLA #13 at West Champions (most likely BYU #1)
- West Runner Up (most likely Utah #4) at St. Mary's #6
Okay- here’s the thing that cheeses me off with these
rankings (See: http://www.uspowerrugby.com/college-d1-a/rankings/
Utah is ranked #4 and St. Mary’s is #6. The Gaels BEAT THE CRAP out of Utah 41-10! WTF? The Gaels have only lost to one team- #1 BYU at BYU. (And SMC beat CAL!- Who would certainly have been ranked #2 if they hadn’t decided to leave the D1-A Division and become the Harlem Globetrotters of college rugby)
Whatever. I guess they’re meaningless until after the playoffs.
Here’s the rest of the St. Mary’s rugby schedule-
